Agen. Clément Martinez, hooker of the SUA: "It's nice, because I had the fangs"

the essential
No longer seen in the Top 14 since receiving Toulouse, Clément Martinez was the author of a good outing in Brive. Hooker in the making, he delivers a few strings to the post.

It's not bad to be reunited with the Top 14 a victory at Brive!

It’s sure it’s fun. It’s a big collective performance. But beware, you shouldn't ignite. We know what happened after Bayonne.

Is this the watchword of the week?

We took a good lesson. Even without saying it, we know it. We have bananas, but we work.

In particular, these 7 balloons stolen in a row impressed…

The guys work hard during the week. I do not know where it stands in the classification of defenses in touch, but we must be not bad (smile). It’s a big positive.

What is the role of a hooker on defensive hits? It depends on the teams. It can be in front or behind. In this case, this is called the connection. As soon as the ball leaves the hands of the opposing jumper, we must cover the area between the touch and our opening half. You have to wait for the three quarters that go up and not leave any holes.

What is your race in this case? Vertical but at low speed or diagonally?

We have to communicate inside with the pillar that is inside. Ditto with the first three-quarters, or the third line if it is a touch at 5. It is therefore rather a race in control to fill this space in order to redo the line. Especially since it is a space targeted by the attackers because it can be advanced.

When you are countered on your first shots, is there this feeling of being "eat your brain" by the opposing opponent?

Especially when I’m young I think because we lack experience. With the pressure of the public too, who groans at home or who rooms us outside. At the third, we ask ourselves questions, we put the broth. It’s like a goal scorer. Each key is a new key. What happened before, you have to erase it, put yourself in a bubble, follow your routine. Also, if the front touches are not good, it may not be the launcher's fault! You have to find the right timing with the jumpers, the lifters and the suit.

As a hooker, what did you feel when the Briviste Acquier came out under the booing of the Amédée-Domenech audience?

Strict. He's been at the club for a while. We had a good counter that allowed us to intercept good shots. The public does not necessarily see this. It is not always the hooker's fault. So it's touching to see that, we especially hope not to live it. If it is, during their video debrief, they will see that the problems do not come from the launch.

On a personal level, you have achieved a good 50 minutes. We imagine that it feels good.

It's always good to find the lawns of the Top 14. We delivered a good performance. In defense, we were present, which we had lacked against Cadtres. The whole club was waiting for a reaction, we got it. Now we know very well what happened after Bayonne. This match is done, so much the better. Now we turn the page. The next two receptions will be very important.

Your last Top 14 match was at the Toulouse reception on December 21. Did you understand not to play anymore?

We had discussions with the coaches. There was nothing negative, it was not a punishment. I'm young, I played enough at the start of the season. I took a step back, I promised myself not to lower my head and return to work. Leave them a good image and tell them that they can count on me at any time of the season, that I would answer this.

The proof on Saturday…

I wanted for sure. Then, knowing that we are going to have a good match or not, we cannot know. But it’s clear that it’s nice. I had the fangs.

This season, when the staff made several changes, it generally led to good results: draw in Racing, victory in Brive…

It's a good band. When there are guys who do not play, instead of giving up or pulling in the legs of others, we will work even more and put ourselves at the service of the collective. So we're all ready the day the coaches call us. Maybe that's why this year, when there were changes outside, we felt this urge. This competition pushes everyone up.

Because we imagine that it must be annoying to read or hear that there is not much staffing depth at the SUA …

Ah yes it is clear. This year, we finish second best training center, first the two previous years. Young players, we still saw this weekend with "Féfé" Corréa or "Coco" Chabeaudie. They answered present. So no, this is not the reality.
