The boxing experts were wondering how Gervonta Davis would occupy after fighting only once in 2018 and only twice in the last 18 months.
The 24-year-old did not miss a beat, a combination that was crowned by a perfect right hook like a photo, which sent his late replacement to Hugo Ruiz to prepare the knockout at 2:59 of the first tower and keep the super WBA. Featherweight championship at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Surrounded by dancers when he went around the ring for "Thriller" Michael Jackson, Davis was assured that he was organizing a show during his first fight in the headliners. Davis submerged Ruiz from the opening bell and attacked the opening bell with left hands to the body. The shots had an effect as Ruiz continued to climb the ropes, allowing Davis to take off at will.
It was not a question of whether, but when, Davis would put Ruiz out of his misery. He finished his job when a right hook crossed Ruiz 's guard to knock him out for a moment and sent him to one knee. Although he stood up, referee Jack Reiss sought to make sure Ruiz could continue. Ruiz, who had a bloody nose, did not want to answer Reiss and the fight was canceled.

The big question now is whether Davis (21-0, 20 KO's) will remain active in 2019? He has vowed to fight at least three times, but he has to show it. His lack of activity due to problems outside the ring was a problem for the budding star. In this day of age, people have little attention and a Davis caliber fighter has to stay in the public eye. As long as he stays active, the superstarom should not be too far, because every time Davis crosses the ropes, he is one of the most exciting fighters in the sport. He is fast, has strong technical skills and raw power that you can not teach.
Who does not want to see Davis against WBC champion Miguel Berchelt and IBF title holder Tevin Farmer during unification fights? Davis may be one of boxing's best, but it's imperative to stay active and face elite fighters no matter who they are lined up with. If he does, Davis will get these honors.
Here is what happened in Davis vs Ruiz.
Davis vs Gervonta results Hugo Ruiz
Gervonta Davis beats Hugo Ruiz in a round to retain the WBA super-featherweight title
12:05 pm Davis def. Ruiz by KO at 2:59 of the first round. It all started with Davis' left right hand, which sent Ruiz back to the ropes. Davis then threw a straight jab, followed by a burning right left hand, and then a perfect and straight image hook for good measure, knocking out Ruiz and dropping to one knee. Referee Jack Reiss asked Ruiz if he wanted to continue. Ruiz seemed not to have done so and the fight was stopped.
11:47: It's time for the main event as Gervonta Davis puts his WBA featherweight title at stake Hugo Ruiz battles. Davis (20-0, 19 KO's) was supposed to face former three-division world champion, Abner Mares, but Mares retired last week because of what had been described as an injury to the elbow. Mares revealed that he was suffering from a detached retina in the right eye during a workout.
Ruiz, 30 (39-4, 33 KO), is a former bantamweight and super bantamweight champion. More recently, he passed the featherweight and defeated Alberto Guevara by unanimous decision on the card under Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner in January.
This has all the ingredients of a Davis rout. Ruiz was chosen for a reason.
Mario Barrios dazzles in a stoppage win over Richard Zamora
11:33: Barrios def. Zamora by KO at 2:16 of the fourth round. Very nice performance of Barrios. The arrival occurred when Barrios swung Zamora with a right right hand. Then, Barrios did something that not enough young fighters do: stay calm and perform specific combinations and not go broke until he has tipped Zamora with a right hook. Barrios closed the show with shots to the body and head to secure the stop.
Could the fight have continued? Yes, but security must always come first. Although Zamora valiantly fought and threw his own thick leather, Barrios was too big, too fast and too strong. He says he wants a big fight. A top 15 of the opponents would be a good step forward in the competition. It's seven consecutive wins in the distance for Barrios.
11:21 p.m.: More action of Barrios and Zamora in two rounds than in the overall fight Fortuna-Bogere. The right hand of Barrios is very strong until now. Zamora has surprised them until now. Zamora must close the distance. Impossible to fight at hand with Barrios' long reach.
11:13: It is now time for Davis' main co-organized event against Ruiz, while Mario Barrios faces Richard Zamora in the middleweight bout. Barrios (22-0, 14 KOs) is one of the most exciting prospects of this sport. The 23-year-old has won six consecutive bouts per stop.
Zamora (15-2, 10 KO) participates for the first time in the United States and wins three consecutive bouts with stop.
At first glance, Barrios should clear Zamora quickly. But that is why they are fighting each other.
Javier Fortuna seizes a decisive victory over Sharif Bogere
22:59: Fortuna def. Bogere by unanimous decision (96-93, 96-93, 96-93). At least, the reversal did not have any effect on the dashboards. It had been a dull affair until Fortuna released his hands in the fourth round and dominated the rest of the fight with his powerful shots. Would always like to see the instant recovery used in boxing. What if it affected the fight and Fortuna won by two points? Something that happens in the future.
Fortuna wins his first victory since September 2017. It's nice to see him back on the winning track. He called Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko for his next fight. Think that Fortuna has to back it up and send it back with Easter and avenge what happened last year.
10:40: Fortuna marks a reversal at the end of the sixth round when he hits Bogere with a left uppercut in the center followed by a right hand behind the head. Bogere was shaken by the shots but seemed to stumble on Fortuna and his right glove hit the rug, which is considered a reversal. Hard to say if the glove touched the canvas. Instant replay would have been beneficial. The sixth run gave the most action in the fight as it seemed the two guys realized they needed to speed it up.
10:37: It's not the most exciting thing we watch after five rounds. Bogere is busier, but in the third and fourth rounds, Fortuna started shooting the hardest shots. Let's hope they speed up and hurry up.
10:25: The crowd inside the Dignity Health Center informed Fortuna and Bogere, after two rounds, of his dissatisfaction with the action of pie cakes inside the ring.
10:15 Javier Fortuna confronts Sharif Bogere in light action. Fortuna (33-2-1, 23 KOs), a former super-featherweight title holder, fought Adrian Granados in a draw in June. Fortuna was hit by a shot and crossed the ring, beating his head against the ground.
After suffering the first loss of his career in March 2013, Bogere (32-1, a free-contest, 20 KOs) is unbeaten in his last ten bouts (9-0, a free).
Good way to start the festivities.
